Overcome Your Fear and Soar
One of my coaching clients recently started her own business.
She was hesitant to give up her 9-to-5 gig because of the steady paycheck. But she decided to take a chance and try something new.
She had done some freelancing and built up her portfolio of work. She had proof that clients would be willing to hire her. But she still had doubts.
Would she earn enough to replace her full-time job?
Would potential clients hire her?
Would she learn how to run the admin side of her business?
The answer to all these questions is yes.
Questions to consider
If you’re considering a job switch, or starting a freelance job on the side, or if you’re facing some other sort of big decision and you’re stressing out over it, here are some questions to consider:
What would be your best-case scenario?
What are you afraid of?
How will you know when you’ve succeeded?
If you knew you would succeed, what would you do?
What one thing do you need to do right now to move toward your goal?
My path to being a successful entrepreneur
Before I started my business, I never thought about being an entrepreneur. My father started his own business, but I never really considered doing the same for myself.
My first client hired me before I even had an official business, or a name, or a website or business cards. She hired me to do a job, and I jumped at the chance. I started the business and worked hard, and it grew from there. I’m now celebrating seven official years of being in business.
I didn’t have a fancy business plan, or a marketing plan, or any of the other things they say you should have. I just had the guts to go for it. I also had a huge number of friends, family members, and clients who had faith in me and helped me get where I am. I’m grateful as heck that things have worked out, and that I’ve worked with amazing nonprofits along the way.
I’ve always thought of it as though I’m building the boat as I’m sailing it. It’s been an organic process.
Basically, I figured out how to do it as I was doing it. You can do the same.
I love how entrepreneur Nik Tarascio describes overcoming negative self-talk as he started his private jet company:
As a pilot, my training required that I overcame negative self-talk. If you can’t quiet that voice saying you shouldn’t be flying through the air, you won’t ever get off the runway. Your brain will try to “protect” you and keep you safely on the ground. However, if you want to fly, if you want to depart from the path of your almost certain future, you’ve got to defy the fear and pull back on the stick.
Do you want to fly?
If you want to fly, you’ve got to defy your fear and get off the ground. Running around on the ground flapping your arms does not make you fly. You must take off in the plane. You can do it!
